What are the best dive spots in the Mamanucas Islands for beginner divers?
As a beginner diver you are spoilt for choice in the Mamanuca Islands. The group provide the beginner diver with:
Sheltered lagoon reefs and coral gardens (shallow, calm water, good visibility).
Lots of fringing reefs (which surround islands) and in the case of Tokoriki Island a stunning house reef a short boat ride away from the dive shop.
What to book:
Book an introductory (PADI Discover Scuba Diving Experience) or if you’ve always dreamed of getting certified, and perhaps have done an introductory dive before - the PADI Open Water course. Nearly every island has a dive shop, with Tokoriki Diving based at Tokoriki Island Resort, being rated the best boutique dive centre in Fiji. With 28 years of experience and owner operated, with benefits such as a training pool, personalized instruction, incredible facilities, fast boats and very nice equipment. Guests staying at Tokoriki Island Resort and Sheraton Tokoriki are able to book dives with Tokoriki Diving.
Expect shallow, sheltered sites and small group sizes for your first dives.
Expect warm water, good visibility and lots of colorful corals and reef fish — ideal for building confidence.
Pre requisites:
The good news is that you do not have to be a good swimmer to try diving for the first time. In fact you do not need to know how to swim at all.
You must allow at least 12 hours after your dive before flying.
You must be fit for diving. You will be asked to fill out the PADI Medical Form, and if you do have to declare an existing medical condition then you will need to get clearance to dive from a Doctor.
What to expect from the experience?
First you’ll be asked to fill out the PADI Medical Form and sign a general waiver. Next you’ll be given your own booklet and asked to spend a few minutes reading through a brief introduction to diving. It’ll take you around 5 minutes to read through and look at the pictures.
Next your PADI Instructor will spend 20 minutes with you in the Tokoriki Island Resort reading room (a beautiful bure by the pool), whilst he shows you what the equipment looks like and what it does, explains a few key safety points and helps to put you at ease.
After this you’ll get suited up in a wetsuit, be fitted for a mask and fins and get in the pool.
The pool section takes around 20 minutes. You will have a chance to swim around, but don’t worry you don’t have to be very good. You’ll be able to practise equalizing and learn three basic skills.
Once completed you’ll then head out to our Home Reef, less than 5 minutes away for a very shallow, guided scuba dive with your Instructor. The dive is beautiful with lots to see.
