Fishing with Deadbaits
Wednesday July 7, 2010
Trolling deadbaits is a form of fishing not practised by many in Fiji, with most opting for the easy option of dragging lures. But if you are prepared to put some effort into catching and rigging baits, its the closest you’ll get to a dead cert.
Recently we’ve been catching lots of good Spanish Mackerel on baits. Best fish has been a shade over 20kg (44lb), with lots of others in the 15kg (33lb) range.
Spaniards are suckers for a slow trolled scad, but everything else loves them too. We’ve had GTs, up to 22kg (46lb) recently, plus Mahimahi and of course big barracuda. There have also been totally unforgettable fish that have crash dived 40m into the reef – could be sharks, but most likely to be big Dogtooth Tuna.
